M.2 SATA vs. NVMe

M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe drives can look identical from the outside, but use entirely different interfaces — telling them apart before buying matters.
The core difference
M.2 SATA drives use the same SATA protocol as 2.5-inch SSDs, just in the smaller M.2 form factor — their speed is capped around SATA's roughly 550 MB/s ceiling. M.2 NVMe drives use the PCIe interface directly, bypassing SATA's limitations entirely and reaching multiple GB/s depending on the PCIe generation and lane count.
Why a slot's interface support matters
Some M.2 slots support only one of the two interfaces; others support both ("NVMe or SATA"). A NVMe-only drive will not work in a SATA-only slot, and vice versa — the connector can look the same while the electrical signaling is incompatible.
How to tell what a slot supports
The laptop's spec sheet or maintenance manual should state explicitly whether each M.2 slot supports NVMe, SATA, or both. If a drive's listing doesn't clearly state its interface, check the model number against the manufacturer's own product page — interface is a defining spec, not an assumption.
