How upgradeable are modern laptops, really?

We checked every source-verified laptop in our database for user-replaceable RAM, a replaceable SSD, and USB-C charging support. Here’s what we found — computed live from 317 models, not a survey or an estimate.

Ship with upgradeable RAM

54.6%

173 of 317 models have a user-accessible RAM slot.

Ship with a replaceable SSD

88.6%

281 of 317 models have a replaceable M.2 storage bay.

Support USB-C charging

77.9%

247 of 317 models accept USB-C Power Delivery input.

Percentages are calculated against all 317 models in the database, including those with unverified/unknown specs for a given category — not just the subset with a known answer. That keeps the headline number honest rather than inflated.

Upgradeability by manufacturer

Manufacturers with at least one source-verified model in our database, ranked by how many models we’ve verified.

Methodology

Every figure on this page is computed live from LaptopCompat’s device database — the same per-device specification data and summarization logic rendered on individual model pages, so these statistics can never drift from what a visitor sees on a specific laptop’s own page.

RAM upgradeable means the model has at least one user-accessible memory slot (a slot with soldered-only memory counts as not upgradeable, even if the same chassis has other slots free).

SSD upgradeable means the model has at least one storage bay documented as user-replaceable.

USB-C charging means the model is documented as accepting USB Power Delivery input through a USB-C port.

Models with no verified information for a given category count toward the denominator as “unknown,” never toward “yes” or “no.” See our full verification methodology for how facts are sourced and confidence is assigned.
