USB-C vs. Thunderbolt vs. USB4

USB-C is the physical connector shape. Thunderbolt and USB4 are protocols that can run over that connector — but not every USB-C port supports either of them.

USB-C: the connector

USB-C describes the reversible connector shape only. A USB-C port might support anything from basic USB 2.0 data and charging up to full Thunderbolt — the connector alone doesn't tell you which.

Thunderbolt: Intel-originated, now open

Thunderbolt (3, 4, 5) is a protocol that tunnels PCIe, DisplayPort and USB over the USB-C connector, enabling high-bandwidth data, multiple/high-resolution displays, and external GPU/storage enclosures. Thunderbolt 3 and 4 both run at up to 40 Gbps; Thunderbolt 4 adds stricter minimum requirements (guaranteed PCIe bandwidth, mandatory dual 4K display support, etc.) that Thunderbolt 3 implementations weren't required to meet.

USB4: the open, unified standard

USB4 is based on Thunderbolt 3's architecture but is an open USB-IF standard, with tiers up to 40 Gbps (and 80 Gbps in USB4 Version 2.0). Most USB4 hosts and devices are designed for broad interoperability with Thunderbolt 3 devices, though a specific vendor's implementation should still be checked against your dock/device rather than assumed.

Practical takeaway

A dock or accessory that requires Thunderbolt or USB4 needs a laptop port that specifically supports that protocol — not just any USB-C port. Check the laptop's documented per-port capability, not just the presence of a USB-C connector.
