Guide
Can You Charge a Laptop with a USB-C Phone Charger?
Often yes: a laptop that charges over USB-C with USB Power Delivery will accept a phone charger, but it charges slowly, and may not gain charge under load, because phone chargers usually supply 18 to 30 W while most laptops are designed for 45 to 100 W. It will not work at all if the laptop charges only through a barrel-plug port or the charger does not support USB Power Delivery.
A certified USB-C charger negotiates the power with the laptop, so a low-wattage charger will not damage it.
Quick steps
- Check that the laptop charges over USB-C. Look for a USB-C port with a charging or power symbol, and confirm on the manufacturer's specification page that the port supports Power Delivery input. The USB-C charging page for each model on LaptopCompat shows this with its source.
- Read the charger's label. A USB Power Delivery charger lists several output levels such as 5 V, 9 V and 20 V. Wattage is volts times amps: 20 V at 3 A is 60 W.
- Compare with what the laptop needs. Most laptops list a recommended wattage (for example 65 W). A charger below that still works but charges slowly, and under heavy load the battery may keep draining.
- Use a suitable cable. Cables rated for 3 A carry up to 60 W. Charging above 60 W (up to 100 W) needs a 5 A cable with an e-marker chip.
Why wattage matters
Laptops need more power than phones. When the charger supplies less than the laptop uses, the difference comes from the battery, so the percentage may fall while you work. Some laptops also show a slow-charger warning, and a few refuse to charge from a source below a minimum wattage.
Higher wattage is fine
A charger with more wattage than the laptop needs is safe, because the laptop only draws what it needs. It does not charge faster than the laptop's own maximum.
Frequently asked questions
Will a phone charger damage my laptop?
A certified USB Power Delivery charger will not damage a laptop that supports USB-C charging, because the two agree on the voltage and current first. A charger that does not support Power Delivery may not charge it at all.
Why does my laptop charge slowly or not at all with my phone charger?
Because the charger supplies less power than the laptop uses. At 18 to 30 W the battery may charge slowly when the laptop is idle and drain when it is busy.
Can I charge any laptop through a USB-C port?
No. Only a USB-C port that supports Power Delivery input can charge a laptop, and many laptops have USB-C ports for data and video only. Check the manufacturer's specification.
