DDR4 vs. DDR5 Laptop RAM

DDR4 and DDR5 are different memory standards with different physical notches, voltages and signaling — a DDR5 module will not fit or function in a DDR4 slot, and vice versa, regardless of capacity or speed rating.

Why they aren't compatible

Each generation uses a different key notch position specifically so an incompatible module can't be physically inserted. Even where a module could physically fit, DDR5 uses a different voltage (1.1V vs. DDR4's 1.2V) and an on-module power-management IC that DDR4 slots aren't wired to support.

Practical differences

  • DDR5 generally supports higher rated speeds (MT/s) and, at the same speed, delivers somewhat better bandwidth due to its dual sub-channel architecture.
  • DDR5 modules typically support higher maximum per-module capacities, which is part of why newer high-RAM laptop configurations (64 GB+) have become more common.
  • A platform (CPU + chipset) is designed for one generation or the other — you can't upgrade a DDR4 laptop to DDR5 by swapping modules, since the memory controller itself only supports one standard.

What this means when buying RAM

Always match the generation your laptop's platform specifies, not just the physical slot type — some listings are ambiguous about SO-DIMM generation, so cross-check the module's stated DDR generation against your laptop's documented memory type before purchasing.
