How to Know if Your Laptop's RAM Is Upgradeable

Not all laptop memory works the same way. Manufacturers use three different designs, and the difference determines whether you can add memory at all.
The three configurations
- Fully soldered — all memory is fixed to the motherboard. No slot exists, so no upgrade is possible regardless of what a listing implies.
- Fully socketed — one or more SO-DIMM (or newer CAMM2) slots hold all the memory. Upgrading means replacing or adding modules in those slots.
- Hybrid — some memory is soldered (for a baseline amount, e.g. 8 GB), plus one open slot for an additional module. Total capacity is the soldered amount plus whatever fits in the slot.
How to check
The manufacturer's own spec sheet or maintenance manual is the most reliable source — look for "memory," "RAM," or "SO-DIMM" in the technical specifications, which typically state slot count and whether memory is soldered. A laptop's marketing page alone often omits this detail, since thinner and lighter designs frequently trend toward soldered memory to save space.
If you already own the laptop, opening the bottom panel (where the manufacturer allows user access) will show empty or populated SO-DIMM slots directly — though this should only be done if the manufacturer documents it as user-serviceable, to avoid voiding warranty coverage.
A soldered baseline doesn't always mean a dead end
A hybrid design with, say, 8 GB soldered plus one open slot still lets you significantly increase total memory — check the documented maximum capacity for that platform before buying a module, since the slot's own per-module limit (not just what's soldered) caps the total.
